Flame Retardants for Polyester Fabrics

Flame retardants are chemicals that are added to materials such as polyester fabrics to reduce their flammability.

The use of these chemicals reduces the risk of a fire spreading and causing damage to people, property and the environment. The most common flame retardants are brominated flame retardants (BFRs), which are added during the manufacturing process. But due to environmental protection purpose, phosphorus-based flame retardants are becoming the main FR for PET Fabrics. Mostly used durable fire retardant for PET fabrics is organic cyclic phosphonate, such as Amgard CU (Hopeflam CU),  Amgard CT (Hopeflam CT), Hopeflam 1045. And non durable FR has many types, such as ammonium polyphosphate Hopeflam APP, Hopeflam CL, etc.

The use of flame retardants in textiles is both controversial and necessary. The controversy stems from the fact that these chemicals are toxic, and there are many concerns about the negative health effects they may cause. However, it is also necessary because without them, more people would die in fires every year. So the better method is to choose environmental friendly flame retardants.
